1. (a) T20

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has announced that he will step down as the T20 captain of the Indian cricket team after the men’s T20 World Cup in Dubai in October 2021. He will remain the captain for the ODI and Test formats.

2. (c) AUKUS

US President Joe Biden announced a new defence pact between the US, UK and Australia on September 15, 2021. The pact known as AUKUS will enable sharing of advanced technologies, expertise in artificial intelligence, cyber underwater systems and long-range capabilities. 

3. (b) Rajendra Trivedi 

Gujarat State Assembly speaker Rajendra Trivedi tendered his resignation just hours before the new Gujarat cabinet was sworn in on September 16, 2021. Trivedi, who is a BJP MLA from Vadodara, was one of the 24 new Gujarat Cabinet Ministers who were sworn in by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat.

Adnan Abu Walid al Sahrawi, the leader of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara has reportedly been killed by the French forces after the group attacked French aid workers and other civilians and troops in Niger. 

5. (c) September 16th 

World Ozone Day 2021, the International Day dedicated for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed every year on September 16. The day is observed as a reminder of the Spring of 1975 when the scientists in Antarctica had detected an appalling drop in the Ozone concentration.

Australian PM Scott Morrison said that the first major initiative under AUKUS initiative (new enhanced security partnership between Australia, UK and US) will be the delivery of a nuclear-powered submarine fleet for Australia.

The UN Security Council (UNSC) called for an emergency meeting on September 16, 2021 to discuss the recent ballistic missile launches by North Korea. The UN resolutions ban North Korea from conducting any tests of ballistic missiles.
